Saint Catherine of Alexandria
Dating: 15th century
Material: Limestone (Ançã stone)
Dimensions (cm): 76 x Ø 72
Inv. no.: PD0161
The Ançã stone, originally from the Ançã region (in Cantanhede, Coimbra district) is a type of limestone which is very soft and easy to cut and to refine. These features allowed it to be used in the execution of architectural projects and sculptures.
This piece, in Ançã stone, represents Saint Catherine – Princess of Alexandria – standing and looking straight ahead. The clothes, with already faded colors, would be red and black, complemented by a blue cloak. She is crowned and holding an open book in her left hand. Both the crown and the book are iconographic references. Due to her wisdom, she is the patron saint of students, philosophers and lawyers.
