A memorial stone honouring the Immaculate Conception. In a free translation into English, it reads: «For perpetual memory. D. João IV, king of Portugal, together with the General Cortes, publicly consecrated himself and his kingdoms to the Immaculate Conception of Mary, with the annual tribute. And he swore that he would forever defend the Mother of God, elect patron of the empire, who was kept from original guilt. So that the piety of the Portuguese lasts, he had this memorial stone engraved in the year of our Lord 1646, in the sixth year of his reign. Year of 1654» (NEVES, 1940: 9).
