A carved candlestick with acanthus leaves motifs. It consists of three parts – base, column and capital. It also has a sconce – a disc next to the capital – to take drops of wax.
Candles were the main means of lighting until the 19th century. In prehistoric times – with the discovery of fire – in addition to cooking and working metals, it became possible to light closed areas.
The first fuel used was animal fat, stored in horns, sea shells or stones with natural cavities.
For centuries, numerous artefacts made of different materials were shaped to store fire: clay, ceramics, bronze, brass, silver, gold, etc. Their design became increasingly decorative and complex, often reflecting the cultural influences of each People.
