Bedchamber: Catarina of Bragança
Temporarily closed
It is not known to whom this chamber belonged, but it owes its name to a portrait of Catarina de Bragança (1638-1705).
Catarina – Infanta of Portugal – was the daughter of King João IV and Luisa de Guzmán. In 1662, she married Charles II and became the Queen Consort of England, Scotland and Ireland. A few years after the death of her husband (1693), she returned to Portugal to inhabit the Bemposta Palace. She is well known for introducing several Portuguese habits in the English Court and was credited the popularization of tea in England, the usage of forks and the creation of an orange jam: the marmalade.
In this bedchamber one may also see pieces of furniture and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.
